Pigg-O-Stat™ Pediatric Immobilizer Operating Instructions

As true with most new and well-engineered medical equipment, you will find the operation of the pediatric immobilizer simple and easy after a little experience. We suggest that your first few x-ray examinations be on children in the age group of 12 to 18 months using large supports.

First, set the technique controls, position tube and select proper film size. Meanwhile, the child who is receiving the x-ray examination should remove all clothing other than the diaper.

Open the supports on the pediatric immobilizer (as a book). Keep the seat as low as possible and yet have child’s mouth up to the level of opening in front of the supports.
Place child on the seat and instruct someone to hold child’s arms in a vertical position, touching ears and firmly immobilizing head between arms. Adjust supports firmly against the child and fasten locks on bases and leather straps at the top of the supports. Fasten the velcro strap at the bottom of the support. Adjust the child patient if not in absolute position.

As always, have the patient well immobilized before permitting assistant to release the patient’s arms and head.

Avoid using the device for patients who are too large. Ultimately, this is at your discretion and best judgment.

Adjust the film to the proper height and in contact with supports; also, adjust lead shield and markers.

For barium studies, place small plastic sponge under child’s chin to prevent barium from spilling inside supports.

Your technical factors will be changed very little by use of supports.

Proper Care and Use of the Pediatric Immobilizer

The Pigg-O-Stat™ is very durable and is able to withstand many times the required stress for proper use as proven in extensive use and testing for five decades.  However, be cautious if the immobilizer suffers a hard blow or drop.

The Pigg-O-Stat is an easy cleanup overall. Sterilize the equipment with Zephiran Chloride. The plexiglass should always be cleaned with soap and water using a soft sponge or cloth. Rinse the plexiglass with clear water.

After extensive use, the moving parts on the pediatric immobilizer can be enhanced with a few drops of oil.
